Question: Guitar hero world tour mic question?

I recently bought the band kit for world tour. but i was wondering: on the mic's strain, what does the sporadic blue hands mean? what am i supposed to do to earn points during that time? i just figured out to hold a single note when the golden waves come up, but what about these blue audience hands??
